Glynn/Brunswick Narcotics Enforcement Team: Illegal Sales of Alcohol

The Glynn-Brunswick Narcotics Enforcement Team working with agents from the Georgia Department of Revenue have been working together to help ensure that underage people do not have a source of illegally obtained alcohol by conducting a joint investigation checking retail alcohol sales establishments in Glynn County.

Tax Preparers Arrested for Fraud

April 19, 2016

On Monday April 18, 2016 Georgia Department of Revenue Agents executed 4 search
warrants throughout the metro Atlanta area related to fraudulent tax preparers. The
locations included businesses in Fulton, Gwinnett, Cobb and DeKalb Counties. In
addition to the search warrants, arrest warrants were issued for Chanel Uboh, Jahaya
Whitmore, Michael Williams, and Phyllis Spears. Williams, Uboh, and Whitmore were
arrested. Ms. Spears currently has active warrants out for her arrest.

IRS: New Tax Scam Targeting Tax Professionals

In advance of the tax deadline, the Internal Revenue Service today warned tax professionals of a new emerging scam in which cybercriminals obtain remote control of preparers’ computer systems, complete and file client tax returns and redirect refunds to thieves’ accounts.

Deal: March tax revenues up 2.2 percent

Gov. Nathan Deal today announced that Georgia’s net tax collections for March totaled $1.53 billion, for an increase of $31.4 million, or 2.2 percent, over March 2015. Year-to-date, net tax revenue collections totaled nearly $15.27 billion, an increase of $1.42 billion, or 10.3 percent, compared to March 2015, when net tax revenues totaled almost $13.85 billion.

Scam Alert-Email Phishing

The Department of Revenue has recently been made aware of a new phishing scam being conducted by criminals. This particular phishing scheme is known as email "spoofing" and is similar to the call "spoofing" that several state agencies have recently faced.

Scam Alert-Department of Revenue Phone Line Spoofed

Please be advised that one of the Georgia Department of Revenue's phone lines has
been subject to Caller ID spoofing. The Department of Revenue (DOR) was first made
aware of this scam on Thursday, March 10th. When a telephone number is spoofed,
the Caller ID of the caller will appear to be coming from a valid number. Other State
agencies have also been victims of phone line spoofing. Earlier this month the Office
of the State Treasury's main phone line was spoofed.
