In order to assist in combatting the growing issue of tax fraud, the Georgia Department of Revenue (DOR) has expanded and enhanced security measures for personal income tax filers. In addition to the DOR’s fraud management system, the DOR will now be requiring certain taxpayers to complete and pass an identity verification quiz. Selected taxpayers will be required to take the quiz online through the Georgia Tax Center (GTC).

The DOR is also sending certain individuals PIN letters which taxpayers must use to verify their return.

For both the identity verification quiz and the PIN verification, taxpayers without internet access should call the DOR’s customer contact center at 1-877-423-6711, selecting option 2 for individual income tax information and then select option 3 for return verification.

“These security enhancements are serving as a great tool for our Fraud Detection Unit by increasing their level of confidence in information they receive in personal income tax returns,” said Director of the DOR’s Office of Special Investigations, Josh Waites, “This has allowed the team to go through returns more efficiently and has significantly reduced the time to process returns in question.”
