Transferring ownership of a vehicle may involve transferring ownership after a sale or from an inheritance or estate.

Transferring Ownership

Every Georgia owner, other than a licensed dealer, must obtain a title in their name for the vehicle before transferring ownership when the vehicle requires a Georgia title.

Vehicle from an Estate

Titles and tags can be obtained at your County Tag Office for a vehicle that has been inherited or purchased from an estate.

Note: If a Georgia title has not been issued for the vehicle and the inheritor is not a legal resident of Georgia, the inheritor must obtain a title in their name first from their home state before selling or transferring the ownership of the vehicle to a Georgia resident.

Joint Ownership/Tenants with rights of Survivorship

By having your title issued with “Joint Tenants with rights of Survivorship” and one of the owners dies, the surviving owner may transfer the title to another party by only completing the assignment of title and attaching a copy of the deceased’s death certificate.
