Two-Year Registration - FAQ
Georgia law, O.C.G.A. § 40-2-20 and 40-2-151, allows the purchaser of a new motor vehicle passenger car to elect an initial registration period of two years or choose the standard one year registration.

What is a new motor vehicle passenger car?
"Passenger car" is defined as every motor vehicle, except all-terrain vehicles, motorcycles, motor driven cycles, multipurpose off-highway vehicles, personal transportation vehicles, and low-speed vehicles, designed for carrying ten passengers or less and used for the transportation of persons.

What is the fee for the two-year registration?
The cost of the two-year registration is $40.

What is needed to qualify for a two-year registration?
The vehicle must be a new motor vehicle passenger car purchased from a dealer and the owner must select a standard passenger plate.

What license plates are allowed for a two-year registration?
Only standard passenger plates may be issued for a vehicle registered with a two-year registration. This registration is not available for specialty or prestige plates.

Can a two-year registration be renewed for an additional two years?
No, after the initial two-years the renewal vehicles may only be renewed on an annual basis. -
Can a passenger car that is leased also receive a two-year registration?
Yes, so long as all of the requirements in are met – must be a new motor vehicle passenger car purchased from a dealer and a standard passenger plate is chosen (not available for specialty or prestige plates).

Can I transfer my existing plate to a qualifying two-year vehicle?
Yes, an existing standard plate can be transferred to a qualifying vehicle for issuance of a two-year registration so long as all of the requirements are met – must be a new motor vehicle passenger car purchased from a dealer and a standard passenger plate is chosen (not available for specialty or prestige plates).

Will I receive a refund if I sell or trade my vehicle with the two-year registration?
No, the registration fee is not refundable. -
Are for hire vehicles, such as taxis and limousines eligible for the two-year registration?
No, only standard passenger plates may receive the two-year registration.
