Apply for a Refund for License Plate Fees Paid in Error

Refunds are allowed only for:

  • Erroneously purchased a license plate or decal for a vehicle you no longer own submit the following to your County Tag Office:
    • License plate/decal issued in error
    • License plate receipt (registration)
    • Signed affidavit from person requesting refund – including to whom sold and the date sold.
  • Two license plates issued for the same vehicle in the same owner’s name, submit the following to your County Tag Office:
    • First license plate/decal issued
    • Original license plate receipt (registration) that is being returned
    • Photocopy of license plate receipt (registration) for license plate being retained
  • Improperly issued commercial license plate calculated in error by MVD or County Tag Office, submit the following to your County Tag Office:
    • Improperly rated license plate
    • Original owners license plate receipt (registration)
