Motor vehicle owners and lessees are required by law to maintain continuous Georgia Liability Insurance coverage on vehicles with active registrations. Driving a vehicle while the registration is suspended, revoked, or cancelled is a misdemeanor. Additional penalties will apply, if convicted of driving a vehicle with a suspended or cancelled registration.
Voluntary Cancellation of Vehicle Registration by Registered Owner
- If you are not going to drive your vehicle, you may voluntarily cancel your vehicle registration with your County Tag Office without surrendering the license plate.
- It is illegal for you to drive or allow someone else to drive a vehicle with a cancelled, suspended or revoked registration or while the vehicle is uninsured.
Important: To avoid any lapse and restoration fees, you must cancel your vehicle’s registration before cancelling your vehicle’s insurance coverage.
Voluntary Cancellation of Registration by Military Personnel
- Active military, either resident or non-resident, can voluntarily cancel vehicle registration if no one is going to be driving the vehicle during your absence
- Registration should be cancelled with your local County Tag Office before cancelling insurance coverage
- Determine your registration period
- Upon returning, registration can be reinstated at your County Tag Office with the following:
- Payment of all ad valorem taxes and registration fees through your County Tag Office
- Acceptable proof of Georgia Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance Coverage
- Complete, sign and submit a Service Member’s Affidavit for Mandatory Insurance Relief, Form MV-18G. The signature on this form must be notarized. Your commanding officer must complete and sign the “Certification of Service Member’s Commanding Officer” section at the bottom of this affidavit.
- Submission of acceptable proof that the vehicle passed an emissions inspection, if required by your county of residence.
